Canada’s Mercan Properties has announced that it will continue to boost investment in Portugal with three new hotel projects located in Lagos, Lisbon and Vila Nova de Gaia, the company announced Thursday in a statement.
The document states that the three projects will be operated under the Marriott International brands and managed by Ace Hospitality Management (AHM).
The statement quoted Jordi Vilanova, president of Marjan Real Estate, as saying that the three hotel units “represent a total investment of approximately 187 million euros and created 281 direct jobs.”
The Marriott Lagos, which represents an investment of 98 million euros, is located next to the Porto de Mós beach and “will focus on the leisure and sports sectors, with various sports facilities, as well as a cinema, Spa And a gym. The unit will have 201 rooms and is expected to create 130 direct jobs. It is scheduled to open in the summer of next year.
Al-Kindi is also advancing on the first project in Greater Lisbon: Moxy Alfragide Lisbon. The project will cost 63 million euros and will contain 218 rooms, an indoor pool, meeting room, restaurant and bar. Here, 130 direct jobs are expected to be created. It is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2024.
Finally, The Riverview, Hotel Tribute Portfolio, located in Vila Nova de Gaia, is an “urban redevelopment project located in one of the historic districts of Porto, two minutes from the D.Luís I Bridge”. This hotel will have a capacity of 70 rooms, with a pool, bar and gym. The investment is worth about 26 million euros and it is expected that 21 direct jobs will be created, scheduled to open in the first quarter of next year.

The Canadian promoter, which began investing in Portugal in 2015, currently has 17 projects in the tourism sector in Portugal, five of which have already been completed – two of the hotels are already in operation and the other three are “soon to open”. The projects are located in different parts of the national territory, namely, Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Matosinhos, Lisbon, Amarante, Évora and the Algarve.
