Jair Bolsonaro said during a press conference in Guaruja (the coast from São Paulo), where he spends the Carnival holiday.
In a note sent in the evening, the Presidency’s Communications Minister clarified that Bolsonaro was referring to the reserved conversation he had with his Russian counterpart on February 16, during his visit to Moscow.
Bolsonaro made it clear at the press conference that Brazil will maintain a position of neutrality and that it supports peace.
“We will not take sides, we will remain neutral and help as much as possible in the search for a solution,” he said. “We want peace, but we can’t bring the consequences here,” the president added, acknowledging that Brazil relies heavily on Russian fertilizers.
Bolsonaro has avoided criticizing Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. Last Thursday, Vice President Hamilton rejected Mourao, who said that “Brazil does not agree to the invasion of Ukrainian territory.”
Bolsonaro said that Brazil worked actively so that the resolution discussed in the UN Security Council, which Russia vetoed, does not contain the word “condemnation,” which has been replaced by the word “regrettable.”
Brazil voted in favor of this resolution. However, it did not sign a declaration from the OAS countries, in which the members “strongly condemn” the illegal, unjustified and unjustified invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation.
After Bolsonaro met with Putin in Moscow, the Brazilian president stressed that his Russian counterpart is looking for “peace” and that Brazil stands in solidarity with any country that seeks to resolve conflicts peacefully.
The trip drew criticism from Bolsonaro from the United States, which stated in a White House press release that the visit left Brazil isolated from “the vast majority of the international community.”
