German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said Germany could do without Russian gas, but warned that doing so would raise energy prices.
“The possibility for Germany to have enough gas and sufficient resources, in addition to imports of Russian gas, exists and must be explored further,” Bloomberg quoted Habeck as saying in an interview with Deutschlandfunk.
Germany, like other European countries, is highly dependent on natural gas imports from Russia. However, geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine could affect gas supplies to Europe, in addition to raising prices.
As one of the measures taken after the deployment of the Russian army in two separatist regions of Ukraine, Germany yesterday announced measures to stop the certification process of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, for the distribution of Russian natural gas in Europe.
“I think there is a good chance that we will maintain stable gas, coal and oil supplies to Germany with the measures we have already taken,” Habeck said.
However, the German minister added that the fact that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline certification process has been halted does not mean that the process will not be resumed. However, he said there was no need to rush to do so.
