Microsoft will soon change the terms of its subscription service in the UK, following an inquiry by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) into auto-update procedures among game platform owners.
The 2019 Inquiry covers offers made by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo in the UK, including how the services handle their respective subscriptions. CMA has now stated that Microsoft plans to transfer its Xbox subscriptions to the region in response to UK regulatory protocols.
CMA says Microsoft will contact passive subscribers on gaming services such as Xbox GamePass and Xbox Live Gold, a reminder of the series of fees and steps to cancel the service. Microsoft will automatically cancel these subscriptions if the user becomes inactive. In the future, total subscriptions can also be refunded to buyers.
As Microsoft makes Xbox subscriptions more transparent, members will be informed about automatic updates and pricing, according to the CMA. Communications with subscribers include steps to cancel accidental renewals and a refund, as well as annual reminders for annual 12-month plans. However, Microsoft has completed 12-month plans for all Xbox subscriptions at this point, restricting total subscriptions to codes coming from third-party retailers.
