Santander deposited about $175,000 into the account of 75,000 Britons after a technical failure this week. The “Christmas gift” ended up in bank account holders and competitors’ accounts.
The company did not specify the cause of the technical failure, but said that customers did not get discounts on their accounts after the problem. Customers of Barclays, HSBC and Virgin Money were also affected.
According to Santander, regular deposits doubled, which may have left account holders not paying attention to their account values. Concern, now, at the expense of the amount already spent by the beneficiaries.
“We are very sorry that due to a technical problem, some payments from our corporate customers were duplicated in deposits to recipients,” the bank said.
In a statement, Santander highlighted the request for assistance from competitors to recover the amounts deposited. However, it is not yet known what will be done to return the money.
“We are working with several banks across the UK to recover these duplicate transactions in the coming days.”
