When it comes to imaging, Sony is a leader in camera sensors and rivals famous companies like Samsung and Omnivision. Sony is constantly innovating the latest technology when it comes to photography, no matter the device. The company recently announced a new feature that will make smartphone photography even better. Sony has unveiled the world’s first CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) image sensor with a dual-pixel layer transistor.
Sony’s Dual CMOS image sensor differs from conventional CMOS image sensors in that it separates photodiodes and pixel transistors into different substrate layers.
In addition, the company released an image to give a better idea of what has changed from the traditional sensors that we see on smartphones. As you can see in the following picture.
According to the Japanese multinational, this new technology allows to increase the level of the sensor’s saturation signal, resulting in a wider dynamic range. The company also claimed that moving the pixel transistors to a separate substrate frees up space and allows the amplifier transistors to increase in size. Another explanation is that the larger amplifier transistors provide remarkable noise reduction, which should theoretically be beneficial for low-light imaging.
Sony also adds that the technology will allow the pixel structure of the new technology to allow pixels to maintain or improve their existing characteristics not only at current sizes, but also at smaller pixels.
In other words, Sony expects that this invention can improve the pixel resolution of cameras. The company confirmed that this technology is intended for smartphones. However, there is no word yet on when you expect to implement this innovation in smartphones.
