Paris will force health workers and firefighters to take a booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to prevent a large outbreak of infection in hospitals.
French Health Minister Olivier Veran stressed this Saturday, in an interview with France Inter, that vaccination must be accelerated due to the micron variant, which is “much more contagious” than Delta and that it could be the most common in France within two weeks.
The Minister explained that there have already been many outbreaks of infection in hospitals in the Paris region, which justifies the extension of the obligation to vaccinate health workers and firefighters with a booster dose from January 30 to prevent this situation from happening.
“We don’t want it to happen to us as it is in Scotland,” he said, “with 25% or 30% of health workers unable to work because they are contact cases, and they are isolated.” He warned that “those who have not been vaccinated will be exposed to infection and there will be serious cases”, after insisting that the goal of circulating vaccination is “to avoid a very strong wave in hospitals.”
In this regard, he noted that there are already 52 million vaccinated people in the country, but about five million are still not immunized.
The Department of Health estimates that between 7% and 10% of infections are indeed caused by the Omicron variant and that, given the speed of reproduction, this percentage will increase to between 25% and 30% in a week and to more than 50% in two weeks.
