“WLAn agreement can be reached if the West shows goodwill. We are looking for a rational, sober and results-oriented dialogue,” Hossein Amir Abdollahian wrote on the social network Twitter last Wednesday night.
“The talks in Vienna are serious, and the priority remains to lift the sanctions,” he said.
After a six-month hiatus, talks to try to salvage the international nuclear deal with Iran resumed in the Austrian capital on Monday.
The agreement was completed in 2015 between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the major powers (the United States, Russia, China, France, Germany and the United Kingdom), and the agreement with the unilateral withdrawal of the United States in 2018 and re-establishment was called into question. Sanctions, to which Tehran responded by violating most of its obligations.
The agreement offered Tehran to lift part of the sanctions that choked its economy in exchange for a drastic reduction in its nuclear program, and placed it under strict UN oversight.
“Experts are continuing their work,” said Hossein Amir Abdollahian, who is leading the talks from Tehran.
“I am in daily contact with (Iranian) chief negotiator Ali Bagheri” in Vienna, he said.
And the Europeans said, on Tuesday, that they are counting on the next few days to assess the “seriousness” of the Iranians in the discussions in which the Americans participate indirectly.
After the formal meeting on Monday, groups of experts began working on the sensitive issue of US sanctions on Tuesday, before discussing Tehran’s nuclear commitments on Wednesday.
