Octopuses, squid and crustaceans such as crabs and crabs are considered sensitive animals and should not be protected by law, according to a recent report that builds on new British animal protection legislation.
One The British government’s report on the sensitivity of mollusks and shellfish has added animals such as octopus, crabs and crabs to the list of organisms that must be protected under the country’s new animal welfare laws because they are capable of feeling pain or suffering. He points out that they should not be cooked alive, and recommends best practices for transporting, stunting, and butchering them.
NS document, entitled “Review of Sensitivity Evidence in Cephalopod Mollusks and Decapod Crustaceans”, resulted from an analysis by experts at the London School of Economics and Political Science that took into account 300 scientific studies, to assess evidence of sensation, which is the ability to possess sensations or impressions.
Using eight different ways to measure sensitivity β including the ability to learn, own pain receptors, connections between pain receptors and specific brain regions, and response to anesthesia or analgesics β the experts found “substantial”, “strong” and “very strong” evidence for cephalopods. (such as octopuses, squid, cuttlefish) and decapods (crabs, lobsters, and crayfish) are sentient beings, because they are able to perceive what is happening to them.
βThe Animal Welfare Bill provides crucial assurance that animal welfare is properly taken into account when developing new laws. Existing scientific knowledge shows that decapods and cephalopods can feel pain, and therefore it is only fair that they be covered by this vital legislation,β he considered, in the statementMinister for Animal Welfare Lord Zack Goldsmith.
The proposal in question, which has not yet become law, provides for the creation of the Animal Awareness Commission, which will issue reports on how government decisions take into account the welfare of conscious animals. It is part of a broader government action plan for animal welfare.
