The Observer noted that a new outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 infection was detected at Tondela Viseu Hospital, the second in a month. This information was confirmed by an official source at the hospital. Eight health professionals and six positive patients tested the following examinations by the hospital center – some regular and random, others performed on all patients at the end of the fifth day of treatment in the hospital.
The first case concerns an inpatient, who, after having tested negative upon entering the institution, tested positive five days later. The outbreak was discovered on November 13, last Saturday, but it did not affect the hospital’s work. In response to questions posed to the observer, an official source confirmed that “Tondela Viseu Hospital Center remains a safe place to provide care.” After the first positive case was identified, all professionals and users of the service in question were tested.
This is the second outbreak identified in this hospital within a month. In an earlier case, 15 people at Tondela-Viseu Hospital – seven health professionals and eight patients – tested positive, an official source announced on October 22. The chain of transmission at the origin of that first outbreak has now been cut short and all positive cases have been isolated after a hospital testing campaign.

As of Thursday, two other hospitals announced that they had an active outbreak at this time: Hospital de Santo André, in Leiria, with 25 infected people, detected on November 7; and the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO) in Lisbon, which, according to the Observer Tuesday, reached 21 people — 12 patients and nine health professionals — and was discovered about a week ago.
