Tennis players said at a news conference for the film’s launch that the new movie, “King Richard: Beyond the Game,” in which Will Smith plays the father of Venus and Serena Williams, is “surreal” and “emotional.”
“No word describes this better than surrealism,” Serena Williams said. He continued, “To see these amazing actresses and the team behind them recount not only our dad’s journey, but my dad’s and my sister’s as well.” “We asked, are we really such a cool thing?”

“Ver x Will [Smith] Serena Williams said playing this role and the way Richard was portrayed took the movie to another level. “It’s so emotional, so good, great job.”
Venus Williams, who was the first of the two sisters to become Wimbledon champions and is the focus of the film, said watching the movie brought tears to her eyes.
“He is very emotional,” he described. “They really understood our family and portrayed us in a way that was really loyal, and I feel so proud of that,” she said. “These guys worked really hard and really wanted to tell a true story and not just a script.”
In the film, which follows the teenage years of the Compton sisters, Venus is played by Sidney and Serena by Demi Singleton. Both had to learn to play tennis to embody athletes on the big screen.
“It was amazing seeing the familiar atmosphere in the studio, and how Demi and Sanya acted like Serena and I when the cameras weren’t filming,” Venus said. “It was so cute. I’m so proud of everything that was done. To be honest, it’s so surreal.”
Sania Sidney, who attended the press conference, said she was “extremely nervous” when she first met Venus Williams, but the athlete relaxed her.
“We had great conversations about them as people,” said Sania, who was excited to learn to play tennis. “Putting myself in Venus’ shoes has taught me a lot,” he said, adding, “It was important for people to know how big her heart is.”
For Demi Singleton, who played Serena, this was her first foray into a production of this scale. “To make it look as real as possible, we did a lot of research,” the young actress said. “It was very important that everything we were going to do was real, because that wasn’t our story. It was their story.”
“We’ve been told everything except tennis,” he said in conversations between actresses and tennis players. “They talked about their lives, their childhood and their friends. We talked to them as people,” he confirmed.
The accuracy of the dramatic representation of the real facts that the film is based on is noted at the end of the film, as audiences see home videos and interviews filmed in the 1990s, when tennis players were in their teens.
“We are inspired by the family’s tireless pursuit of this dream,” said producer Tim White, who conceived the idea of taking the story to the big screen with Trevor White.
“At first we thought this could be the best training story ever,” Trevor White said. “Over time, we realized it was far beyond the coaching story, it was about a family. It was very inspiring to us.”
Inspiration is specifically one of the things Venus and Serena Williams hope audiences will take in after watching the movie. “Anything is possible,” said Venus, “always believe in yourself.” “Doubt doesn’t do you any good. It’s successful,” he continued, stressing that this is a “family movie” and that family “can take you higher.”
Serena also left a message of encouragement: “You have to believe in yourself. Setting standards for dreams in heaven is not to dream high,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to set ambitious goals.”
