DrAccording to the clarifications provided by the company to this municipality in the Aveiro region, the outgassing was due to a “sudden cut” of electricity that led to the shutdown of the nitric acid plant in the Estarreja complex.
“The sudden stop results in a decrease in the efficiency of the gas treatment system and the emission of nitrogen oxides on schedule. This is a limitation even for the best existing technologies, which is what happens in Bondalti in Estarreja, and this situation is unavoidable,” notes the information from the municipal civil protection service .
Although these pollutants are emitted for a few minutes, with a “strong visual effect”, the municipality asserts that this “does not pose any danger to the health of the residents, the environment or the safety of installations”.
The same note also indicates that Bondalti is in contact with the authorities, providing all clarifications and cooperation, and informing that the normal functioning of this unit has already been re-established.
