US says it is “possible” to cooperate with the Taliban
The Chief of Staff of the US Armed Forces, Mark Milley, has admitted that it is “possible” that the United States will cooperate with the Taliban in the future in counter-terrorism operations in Afghanistan. The common enemy of the Americans and Islamists is ISIS-Khorasan.
General Mark Milley, at a Pentagon briefing, said at a Pentagon briefing, along with Secretary of Defense: Lloyd Austin.
Mark Milley made these statements to justify the alliance between the Taliban and American forces in recent weeks, especially when, in recent days, Islamic extremists took Americans to the airport to help in the rescue operations of the American military, after 20 years of military intervention. With NATO, he left Afghanistan last Monday.
The United States has withdrawn all of its personnel from Afghanistan and maintains contacts through its diplomatic presence in Doha, Qatar. Now that US forces have been withdrawn, one of the biggest unknowns is what the relationship will be between Washington and the Taliban regime, when both have a common enemy: ISIS-Khorasan, the most extreme jihadist group in existence. In Afghanistan, responsible for last week’s bombing that killed more than 160 people in Kabul.
On the possibility that the 2021 Taliban will be more moderate than those who ruled Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001, Mark Milley said Islamic extremists remain “unrelenting”. “Whether they change or not, we still have to wait and see,” he added.
