The largest animal inhabiting the planet has returned to the waters of Galicia, after 40 years of absence, announced the Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute (BDRI). blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) which is about 24 m long and was recently seen near Ons Island, in the Atlantic Islands Marine Wild National Park area.
The discovery was made by the team of scientists from the BALAENATUR project, which has been studying the presence of this mammal in the waters of Galicia since last year, in partnership with the Biodiversity Foundation of the Spanish Ministry of Environmental Transformation.
In the 1970s, before whaling was banned, an entire generation of blue whales disappeared. Now, after more than forty years, we are witnessing the return of the descendants of the few who have managed to survive,” says Bruno Diaz, marine biologist and director of BDRI, to the Spanish newspaper Público.
“We want to share with you the good news of the existence of the largest animal species on the planet and a symbol of the conservation of our oceans, the blue whale that returns for another year to feed in the rich Galician waters. Without a doubt, it is a sign of the importance of preserving the enormous marine biodiversity found in these waters. ,” describes BDRI on social networks.
