Winger Ivan Cavalero is one of the most important new features in Angola’s squad for the first qualifying rounds for the 2022 World Cup against Egypt and Gabon, on 2 and 5 September.
The former Benfica player, now at Fulham, has played several matches for Portugal’s youth teams and made two first-team appearances, but has benefited from the relaxation of FIFA’s rules on changing citizenship to make his first appearance in a Black Sable squad.
In the same situation was Helder Costa, who had already been called up by coach Pedro Gonçalves for the Africa Cup of Nations matches, in March but ended up not playing against Gambia and Gabon.
On the call, represented by several active players in Portuguese clubs, two other debutants were highlighted: Kevin Bocuso, defender NEC Nijmegen, and Stade Lausanne midfielder Giovanni Bamba.
