The Municipal Hospital, the gateway to Covid-19 treatment in the largest city in the valley, has returned to focus patients over 60 as the largest portion of those admitted to the intensive care unit in São José dos Campos.
According to the Ministry of Health, today 40% of the detainees are between the ages of 60 and 70, while those over the age of 70 represent 36% of the detainees. With less than 60 years of age, hospitalization today accounts for 24%. In June, people under the age of 60 represented 68% of those hospitalized in São Jose.
The numbers also come on the heels of a survey conducted by the state’s SindHosp (Confederation of Hospitals, Clinics and Laboratories), which indicates that 60% of private hospitals today focus patients over the age of 70 as the majority in the intensive care unit.
Although the index is popular throughout 2020, it underwent a change in 2021, when people under 60 were the majority in the family, in a kind of ‘rejuvenation’ epidemic.
For infectious scientist Lucas Darigo, the change may be related to the delta variant, which is more transmissible, and with the potential for increased vaccination.
“This issue of the need for a third dose for elderly patients, I feel we already have full evidence from reading this data. Patients are becoming susceptible again, particularly to a more infectious strain. It seems like it really should be done. Boosted every year,” explained.
