a The Italian mafia has taken advantage of the health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic to infiltrate the Italian health system. Italian police revealed the arrest of nine people accused of concluding fraudulent contracts with a regional health authority, according to AFP.

The suspects were accused of infiltrating the regional health authority on the orders of the ‘Ndrangheta, the powerful Calabrian mafia. They made contracts to clean up hospitals, but submitted false receipts to receive more money from the regional health authority.
In addition, the suspects forced some of their employees to give them €250 of their salaries per month and cut their Covid-19 vaccination queues.
