The end of the year is a time that many people look forward to, whether it’s for the holidays, seeing friends, or family gatherings. But this occasion can also negatively affect mental health. To talk about this topic, Saúde com Ciência spoke this week with the psychologist from the Center for Psychoeducational Support for Students at the UFMG Faculty of Medicine (NAPEM), Gilmar Fidelis.
The first tip for a teacher is that goals for the coming year should be set responsibly. It is important to organize your life in such a way that you have prospects. “But be careful: Never put this on someone else. You can’t set your expectations based on someone else.”
Also regarding projects, the second thing is to set concrete goals. “The ideal is to sit quietly and analyze your desires. From there, break the goal down into small tasks that can be spread over the months.” “We have a habit of dragging the past and projecting ourselves into the future. At the same time, the present becomes neglected.
The third advice is to pay attention to the spiritual aspect. “Let it be philosophy, or whatever else the mind does. This does not necessarily mean religion. But stick to the things you believe in. It has been scientifically proven that people who respect their beliefs have better prognoses.”
Another way to make this moment lighter is to pay attention to your emotions. It is important to stay close to those who benefit you and distance yourself from those who constantly cause you inconvenience in your life. “I call it healthy distance,” he explains, “this distance so you can see some situations more fully.”
The final teacher tip, which doesn’t just apply to the end of the year, is to focus on the present. “People don’t listen to each other. Try to focus on the moment you’re in, and on the people around you. It’s very common to be at a family gathering and talk to people without actively listening to what they’re saying.
Health with knowledge
In this week’s Health with Knowledge program, we will talk about anxiety in the context of end-of-year celebrations and ways to deal with this issue, so that the next year does not begin with an emotional burden of exhaustion.
