A 45-kilogram sunfish was washed ashore in Oregon, United States, last week. It is found in Sunset Beach, in Seaside, a city in the northwest of the state.
According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, not much is known about this species. He explains that he lives in the depths of the ocean and is generally found in temperate and tropical waters CNN.
The sunfish was found in the sand and was immediately named for the Seaside Aquarium, one of the oldest aquariums on the West Coast of the USA. In the state in which it was found, he had not been there for more than an hour.
Keith Chandler, who is in charge of the Seaside Aquarium, confirmed to CNN that it is a fish. ‘It is unusual to find it’, adding that they are not usually seen on the coast: “It was very impressive for the locals”.
“Unfortunately he did not appear alive, but we arrived before the birds,” he said.
The Seaside Aquarium official also explained that the sunfish will be frozen, and they, in partnership with a local organization, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, will dissect it. Keith Chandler adds that the goal is to “get as much data as possible” to learn more about these species.
