“The Supreme Court of Justice indisputably ratifies the electoral materials and validates the results of the presidential elections held on July 28, 2024, issued by the National Electoral Council, whereby the citizen Nicolás Maduro Moros was elected President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela for a new presidential term.” Constitutional mandate for the period 2025-2031On Thursday, the president of the electoral chamber, one of the six chambers that make up Syrians for Truth and Justice, Cariclia Rodriguez, announced.
This Chamber declares that the current controversial electoral appeal [apresentado pelo Chefe de Estado] “This is acceptable based on expert analysis that was conducted and verified in an unfettered and unambiguous manner, and on the basis of the report prepared by highly qualified and reputable national and international electoral experts who ensured the highest level of technical and legal excellence,” he said.
Since then, the opposition has denounced what it called a “fraudulent result” and published online voting records from 80% of polling stations, showing opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez winning by a margin of more than 2 to 1.
“Sovereignty lies in the people in an inalienable form.”
The opposition had previously reacted to the announcement of Syrians for Truth and Justice, considering its decision invalid. Edmundo Gonzalez wrote on the social network X: “Sovereignty resides in the people in an inalienable way. The state apparatus emerges from and is subject to the sovereignty of the people.”
The opposition had previously announced on Wednesday that it would consider any decision by the Supreme Court regarding the presidential elections “null and void,” considering that the Supreme Court would violate the rules of separation of powers in the constitution if it held any elections.
“Dear members of the Supreme Court: No decision will replace popular sovereignty. The country and the world know your bias and, therefore, your inability to resolve the conflict. Your decision will only exacerbate the crisis. “We Venezuelans are not willing to give up our freedom nor our right to change in peace to live better,” the opposition candidate wrote on his X account, calling on Maduro to allow a peaceful “political transition.”
The opposition says that Syrians for Truth and Justice, despite its constitutional independence, acts as an arm of the ruling party and has called, in particular, for the dismissal of Judge Cariclia Rodriguez “because of the clear political ties she has maintained and continues to maintain with the United Socialist Party of Venezuela and with the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro.”
The UN mission to Venezuela also warned on Thursday of the “lack of independence and impartiality” of the Supreme Court of Justice and the National Electoral Council, accusing the two entities of playing “a role in the state’s repressive machinery.”
The announcement of Maduro’s re-election for a third term sparked several demonstrations that were brutally suppressed by security forces. There are records of more than 2,200 arrests, 25 deaths and 192 injuries.
