Peel Ports Group It will expand its steel and metal terminal in response to strong growth in customer demand Port of Liverpool. The second-largest port operator in the United Kingdom will begin construction in 2023 on an expanded 20,000-square-foot warehouse at its North 3 Canada Road location.
The group’s reversal came when the Port of Liverpool experienced one of its best-ever operations with steel volumes in September, with more than 75,000 tonnes handled by port and Birkenhead docks.
July 2021 was the port’s biggest month of steel operations in more than two years, with 93,000 tonnes handled at the site.
An initial phase of 8,000 square feet of newly developed warehouse space is currently in use, and construction is underway for a second phase of a 12,000 square foot terminal addition, which will be completed in December.
Phil Hall, Director of Mersey Ports at Peel Ports Group, “We are very pleased to see the increase in demand for steel handling at our port in the last few months. This positive news has led us to choose to increase the size of our installations, which gives customers the opportunity to upgrade our handling installations at the port and expand its capacity.
“We believe this will be a very important and worthwhile investment, given the advantages of the Port of Liverpool’s central location and proximity to manufacturing sites in the UK,” he added.
The site now has 280,000 square feet of indoor storage, as well as 100,000 square feet of outdoor storage. It now has a total production capacity of over 600,000 tonnes per annum.
The installation in the United Kingdom is a fully automated steel terminal that brought in £9 million in profits in 2016.
