UN urges Spain and UK to resolve Gibraltar issue

The The Magna Assembly of the United Nations (UN) approved a set of resolutions on decolonization dealt with annually by its Fourth Commission.

In Gibraltar, the General Assembly indicated that the United Kingdom was in favor of continuing the so-called “trial forum” (between Spain, Gibraltar and the United Kingdom), but referred to the forum for Madrid. “No more and to be replaced by a new local cooperation mechanism representing the Campo de Gibraltar and the residents of Gibraltar”.

According to the organization, the final settlement in Gibraltar’s case will “listen to Gibraltar’s legitimate interests and aspirations under international law” and insist that the two countries “advance in areas of mutual interest towards a dialogue-based relationship”. with cooperation”.

Spain and the United Kingdom disagree on representation when it comes to speaking on behalf of Gibraltar: Madrid prefers direct talks with the United Kingdom, while London prefers to leave these discussions in the hands of the Gibraltarians.
