British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced an £84 million fund to be used to address irregular migration at its source in Africa and the Middle East.
Keir Starmer issued a press release after the 4th European Political Community (CPE) summit organized by the United Kingdom at Blenheim Palace, 100 kilometers from the capital London.
Starmer highlighted that his country’s cooperation with the European Union (EU) will be strengthened in the areas of irregular migration, safety and security: “We are reshaping our relations. This is one of the key questions of today’s summit. We will eradicate migrant smugglers, disrupt their operating systems and secure our borders. With practical solutions in accordance with international law. And we will do so, not by spending taxpayers’ money on useless programs.
Stressing that the UK’s increased presence at Europol was a step in that direction, Starmer said: “To fight irregular migration, we must also fight migration at its source. Today I am announcing £84 million (approximately 3.6 billion Turkish lira) of new funding to be used for projects in Africa and the Middle East, This includes humanitarian and health support, access to vocational training and education, which is vital to combating migration.”
Stressing the need to tackle the issue of irregular migration seriously, Starmer recalled the cancellation of plans to deport irregular migrants to Rwanda from previous UK governments for this reason.
