Donald Trump’s campaign will launch a $10 million advertising campaign in six battleground states this week in an effort to stem a surge of voter enthusiasm and donations for his Democratic rival Kamala Harris, in what will be the Republican nominee’s biggest push for the White House since January, when he was still battling his party’s rivals for the presidential nomination.
After President Joe Biden dropped out last week and endorsed Harris, the new Democratic candidate has been quick to shore up support within the Democratic Party and among major donors, and has also sparked new energy among groups like young voters, whom Biden has been fighting to win over.
Donald Trump, 78, on Monday launched an ad on his Truth Social platform using Kamala Harris’ own words from old interviews, campaign events and debates to portray her as a radical liberal out of touch with ordinary Americans. Harris accused the Trump campaign of lying about her record. “Vice President Harris has been a critical leader working across the board to advance the Biden-Harris Administration’s popular and historic agenda,” said Sarafina Chitika, a spokeswoman for Harris.
Since emerging as her party’s nominee, Kamala Harris has focused on Trump’s criminal convictions in a secret trial in New York and other criminal charges he faces, portraying him as responsible for a wave of anti-abortion measures in Republican-led states across the country.
While Kamala Harris is well known, her policy positions are not. “She has a second chance to make a first impression,” Evan Roth Smith of Democratic pollster Blueprint told Reuters, stressing that the risk for Harris is whether the Trump campaign can do that. Figure that out, keep it in the minds of voters before your campaign hits TV.
