Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov used his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday to justify Russia’s “special military operation” with ‘Nazis still exist’ in Ukraine and launched a blunt attack on the United States. Lavrov also left Criticism of the actions of the Secretary-General of the United NationsAntonio Guterres, and argued that India and Brazil should become permanent members of the organization’s Security Council.
Towards the end of his speech, Lavrov drew on the words of former UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, saying: “The United Nations was not created to take countries to heaven, but to save them from hell.”. And before he finished, he stressed that the Ukraine issue should be resolved in the first place through diplomacy.
Before that, he advanced the thesis that the international system is undergoing a moment of change driven by the action of North America, which he portrayed as intimidating all the nations of the world and polluting the performance of the United Nations itself. “instead of [a comunidade internacional] Looking for a compromise, we are dealing with disinformation, plot and provocation” in the context of the conflict in Ukraine, he began by saying.
To justify Russia’s role in the Ukrainian conflict, Lavrov invoked two arguments: to move forward with “de-Nazification of Ukraine” and to ensure security on the borders close to Russia, which he feels “threatened.”
