The World Health Organization (WHO) says the possibility of controlling this year’s coronavirus pandemic remains open, but warns that this opportunity is at risk.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Monday participated in the Global Action Against Covid-19 meeting, organized by the United States. Speaking at this meeting, the Director-General of the World Health Organization warned that the world “is at an increased risk of wasting” the opportunity to end the pandemic, according to EFE.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that the rise in the number of mild cases of Covid-19 in countries with high vaccination rates is “leading the false narrative that the epidemic is over”.
The WHO official said that this situation is combined with the various cases of countries where levels of vaccination and testing are very low, “which creates the ideal conditions for the emergence of new types of coronavirus.”
Ghebreyesus noted that 116 countries may not reach the global goal of vaccinating 70% of the population against Covid-19 by the middle of this year, a goal that experts say is necessary to achieve herd immunity.
“We urgently need the support of political leaders to speed up the distribution of vaccines,” said the Director-General of the World Health Organization.
