With the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the global sports community is facing serious challenges due to the measures imposed in many countries around the world.
On the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, observed on Monday, the United Nations says this should not stop people from being physically active.
Importance
In a note about the date, the organization states that people should also not only be “separated from coaches, teammates, teachers and fellow fans who help keep people fit, but also socially active.”
The closure of gyms, sports facilities and fields, public swimming pools and dance studios prevents many from participating in individual or team sports or fitness activities, as well as attending live sporting events.
Despite these difficulties, the World Health Organization has some advice on how to achieve this without equipment and with limited space. There are other free digital tools that encourage people of all ages and abilities to stay active while staying at home.
The agency recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week, or a combination of both.
lonliness
According to the United Nations, “sport has the power to change the world.” It is a fundamental right, a powerful tool to strengthen social bonds and promote sustainable development and peace, as well as solidarity and respect.
“Even at home, it is possible to come together and share creative ways to improve health and well-being through sport and physical activity,” the organization states.
right
The right to access and participate in sports is recognized in many international agreements.
In 1978, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) described this activity as a “fundamental right for all.” However, according to the United Nations, “the right to exercise is often ignored or disrespected.”
In the 2000s, sport was also part of the Millennium Development Goals. In the 2030 Agenda, the General Assembly recognized activism as “an important facilitator of sustainable development,” highlighting the promotion of tolerance and respect, as well as contributions to the empowerment of women, youth, individuals and communities.
