On Tuesday, the North Korean leader’s sister warned that the country was ready to take “swift and overwhelming measures” against the United States and South Korea.
Kim Yo Jong’s reaction came after a nuclear-capable US plane flew over the Korean peninsula on Monday, as part of a joint exercise with South Korean warplanes.
Kim Yo Jong did not mention the planned actions, but North Korea has been repeatedly testing missiles in response to military exercises in Washington and Seoul, which it interprets as a rehearsal to prepare for an invasion.
“We are attentive to the military movements of the US forces and the South Korean puppet army and are always on alert to take appropriate, prompt and urgent measures at any time in line with our analysis,” Kim Yo Jong said in a statement. Reported by state media.
“The military moves and all kinds of rhetoric on the part of the United States and South Korea, which are too fast to be ignored, undoubtedly provide [à Coreia do Norte] and conditions of compulsion to do something to counter them.”
South Korea said the exercises demonstrated the allies’ ability to provide a decisive response to potential North Korean aggression.
In a separate statement, also released today, the North Korean Foreign Ministry called the action with the US B-52 bomber a reckless provocation that pushes the situation on the peninsula into a “bottomless quagmire.” In the same memo, the North Korean authorities stressed that there were no “guarantees that violent physical conflict would not occur” if the US and South Korean military provocations continued.
