Maryland Governor Wes Moore today welcomed the ongoing work on NBC News, saying he hopes to “reopen the channel by the end of May.”
On March 26 this year, the Daly, a 300-metre-long, Singapore-flagged ship, suffered a malfunction and collided with the Francis Scott Key Highway Bridge, which collapsed in seconds, like a house of cards.
Six workers carrying out repair work on the bridge, all immigrants from Latin America, died. Since then, the Daly container ship has continued to partially block the access channel to the important commercial port on the east coast of the United States.
The authorities responsible for the operation to remove the ship from the site stated that the Dali will be ready to be refloated from midday today (17:00 Lisbon), before being moved at high tide on Monday, with the operation scheduled to take place at 5:24 am (12:24 Lisbon).
Tugboats will transport Daly at a speed of about 1.6 kilometers per hour to a nearby marine station, and are expected to take three hours.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge was an important highway hub in the northeastern United States, connecting Washington, D.C., to New York City.
As for the Port of Baltimore, it is a center for trade in new vehicles in the United States, as about 850,000 cars and trucks passed through it last year, more than any other port in North America.
