Spouses suffering from this dual unemployment are entitled to a 10% increase in the value of the unemployment benefit, when they have dependents.
The number of couples in which both members were unemployed rose by 3.7% in November compared to the same period last year, up 3.6% compared to the previous month, according to data from the Institute of Employment and Apprenticeships (IEFP).
“Among the total number of unemployed people who are married or in a civil union, 9,790 (8.0%) also have a record that their spouses are also registered as unemployed with the Employment Service, for a total of 4,895 unemployed spouses, in November 2023, which represents + 3.7 %, compared to the same period of the previous year,” the Authority stated, in a statement issued today.

According to the IEFP, “At the end of November 2023, 299,908 unemployed people were registered with employment services on the continent, of whom 40.6% were married or living in a de facto union, making the total 121,882.”
According to the institute, “unemployment registered in the Employment Department on the continent increased by 6.7% compared to the same period last year and 3.0% compared to the previous month,” and “in relation to the total number of unemployed people who are married or about to get married.” In the case of the actual union, there is an increase of 3.7% (4405 unemployed) compared to November 2022 and an increase of 2.2% (2573) compared to October 2023.”
