Who hasn’t found a commercial for hearing aids or better for the miracle cure for deafness or hearing loss? Or who the promoters of this miracle did not approach in the test?
The prevalence of opaque and unfair communications, as well as opaque advertising, is certainly and closely related to the growing number of complaints submitted to DECO about the purchase of expensive and ineffective hearing aids.
Consumers, mostly elderly, more susceptible to aggressive selling strategies, and those with some hearing loss claim to be familiar with selling these devices through advertising and promotional communications, over the phone or on the doorstep, or even in commercial establishments.
After the product was first introduced, consumers “captured” the sale of hearing aids, being invited to participate in the shows. This is where the novelty lies, i.e. it seeks to entice consumers with a seemingly innocent strategy of health promotion and hearing disease prevention, but which hides an unfair business practice.
Once the examination is complete, it is suggested to purchase an expensive hearing aid, often associated with a credit agreement. Unprepared, uninformed and stressed, consumers end up giving up to buy a product they don’t need and can’t afford.
Later, in the face of the situation and the high amounts to be paid, the affected consumers are left without protection.
