LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s intelligence chief said on Wednesday there was little evidence that foreign powers such as Russia or China were behind the racist attacks on UK black footballers following their defeat in the Euro 2020 final.
A league source told Reuters on Tuesday that 70% of the English Premier League’s data on tracking abuse against players includes abuse from social media users outside the UK.
“This kind of racist abuse is not a specific form of government-led misinformation that is of direct professional concern to my organization,” Ken McCullum, director general of the British Defense Service MI5, told reporters.
“If we publicly blame this phenomenon of racism abroad, we can run the risk of not taking part in the problem that exists within our own country,” McCullum said.
