On Friday the 14th, the Santa Catarina State Ministry of Health (SES) requested the Ministry of Health (MS) to expand the scope of dengue vaccination to the Foz do Itajai region. SES had already submitted the request through an official letter
on April 26.
The request takes into account the epidemiological scenario of intense dengue transmission in the state, so that a possible expansion of vaccination against the disease in SC can be implemented, with priority given to the areas of Foz do Río Itajaí. In April, the SES justified the request in light of the high number of dengue cases and deaths confirmed in the state in 2024.
“This is the second time we have applied to the Ministry of Health to expand dengue vaccination to the Foz do Río Itajaí region, which so far has 77,195 probable cases, with an incidence rate of 9,519 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and 59 confirmed cases.” Deaths. “This week we received vaccines for the Chapeco region, which have already been distributed, but expansion is necessary to combat the increase in cases,” highlights the Secretary of State for Health, Diogo Demarchi.
As of June 13, according to the government commission, 341,000 probable cases of the disease and 256 deaths had been reported, with a focus on the Foz do Río Itajaí region.
Among the state’s health regions, the Foz do Río Itajaí region is the region with the third highest number of probable cases, behind the Northeast region and Medio Vale do Itajaí and with the second highest number of recorded deaths, behind the Northeast region.
Other regions highlighted by the Santa Catarina State Ministry of Health that have the highest number of cases and deaths are: the West (which has recently been covered with doses of the vaccine), the Far West and Zancazari. Areas where SES is requesting that vaccine doses be sent to them as well.
