Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu has regained third place in the artistic gymnastics floor final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on her protest.
During the apparatus finals on Monday, Barboso achieved the third best result in the final round (13.700 points), and thus the bronze medal, behind Brazilian Rebecca Andrade (14.166) with the “gold” and second place in the Nordic level. American Simone Biles (14.133) who won three golds in the French capital.
As the Romanian was already celebrating, North American Jordan Chiles filed a protest against her original score of 13.666, which put her in fifth place. The judges accepted this complaint and awarded her $13,766 to upgrade her to the bronze medal.
The Romanian team appealed to TAS arguing that Chiles’ complaint was filed outside the one-minute time limit allowed under the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) regulations, more specifically, one minute and four seconds.
TAS confirmed today that the initial score awarded to Chile should be restored to fifth place, and that it is up to the IAAF to determine the individual final ranking and award medals.
The International Federation had previously revealed in a statement that the final classification would be changed, according to the TAS decision, and that Ana Barboso had finished third in the competition, explaining that as for the medals, it was up to the International Olympic Committee to correct the situation.
The International Olympic Committee has already commented on the incident and announced that Jordan Chiles will have to hand over the medal to Ana Barboso.
