a There was a state of confusion in the Italian Parliament when MP Leonardo Dono, from the Five Star Party, confronted the Minister of Regional Affairs, Roberto Calderoli, holding the Italian flag in his hand, on Wednesday.
Other MPs from the League and the Brotherhood of Italy quickly joined the scuffle and allegedly attacked Dono, who had to be carried from the chamber on a stretcher.
The MP told the local press: “Among the various kicks, I also received a very strong punch on my sternum and lost consciousness because I could not breathe,” adding that he is considering “taking action” against the MPs who he says attacked him.
A League MP admitted that he “lunged” at Dono, but refused to touch him.
The Five Star Movement deputy was protesting against the House of Representatives’ vote on a controversial draft law, which provides for increased autonomy for the Italian regions.
