Doctors without borders. Mariupol, without energy, water and food, is in a “disastrous” human condition.
MSF has advocated the “necessity” of quickly evacuating residents from the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, which is besieged by the Russian army, due to the “catastrophic” humanitarian situation.
“In Mariupol, the situation is catastrophic and it is getting worse by the day,” said Laurent Ligozat, emergency coordinator of the NGO Ukraine. “Today (Saturday), there is no more water; People are facing great difficulties in obtaining clean water and this has become a major problem. No electricity or heating. Food is running out and the stores are empty, ”he described, from Lviv in the west of the country.
After several days of bombing, Russia announced, on Saturday morning, a ceasefire and the opening of humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians trapped by the fighting in Mariupol, on the Black Sea, and in the neighboring city of Volnovaka, also besieged. But shortly thereafter, the Ukrainians postponed the withdrawal of the population, citing ceasefire violations by Russian forces, which they denied.
“For several days no one has entered or left the city,” Lagozat lamented, and appealed to the belligerents to allow civilians to leave the site.
