Entrepreneurs and companies from the manufacturing sector of Rio Grande do Norte are optimistic about the results of an international mission conducted to learn about good practices and projects in the offshore wind energy sector (offshore) in the United Kingdom. The country is the leader in the production of this type of energy in Europe and, according to the members of the delegation of Rio Grande do Norte, makes important contributions to this sector, which should reach the state in the coming years. In addition, the aim was to anticipate contacts for future partnerships.
One of the participants in the delegation, Sérgio Azevedo, President of the Civil Construction Union in RN (Sinduscon-RN), highlighted that coordination between the education sector, private initiative and legislators in the United Kingdom serves as a model. Norte can create sustainable projects based on collaborative efforts to do Rio Grande. “We need to create an ecosystem for prosperity, with the sum of efforts of all supporting the development of the state,” he points out.
“In the UK, it works very harmoniously between universities, the private sector, city halls and legislators. It’s a lesson for us,” says Sintuscon president. Besides Sérgio Azevedo, Idema and Sebrae’s representatives are from Rio Grande do Norte (Fiern) and Senai. Led by a federation of trade unions, the delegation, which started in Manchester and ended in London, the capital of the United Kingdom, included RN industrialists.
The event includes participation in the 10th edition of the Offshore Wind Connectivity Conference, one of the most important in the country. The mission also includes the visit of innovation hubs, offshore wind installations and port infrastructure in the region. The cities of New Newcastle and Hull and the Dogger Bank Wind Project, which when completed will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm, also visited facilities under development.
“The aim is to talk to business people from RN, academics and companies that provide services to the maritime chain. As we enter this field RN, we gain the knowledge to meet the demands of the future. On the other hand, we prepare ourselves for local partnerships in the case of offshore production, as some companies here already know how to build an offshore chain or provide services. As experts in all aspects of Brazilian law, we can act as a facilitator in these processes,” says Sergio Acevedo.
Rio Grande do Norte has 10 offshore wind projects awaiting licensing at the Brazilian Institute for Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA). In total, the campuses add up to 17.84 gigawatts (GW), which is 9.7% of the planned capacity for the entire country (182.98 GW). The projects in the state are divided into: Beta and Galinhos project (3 GW each); Botticuare (2.8 GW) and Maral (2 GW) wind.
The other six farms have the following energy capacities: Ventos do Kaisera (1.9 GW); Potiguar Alisios (1.8 GW); sea water (1.7 GW); Cattleya (1.1 GW); Petra Grande (624 MW); and test site (22 MW). Sérgio Azevedo estimates that the visit of the projects will be important for many sectors of the economy, and said that he expects the visit to the United Kingdom to lead to future partnerships with the RN.
Sindhuscon-RN’s chairman says to look forward to partnerships through linkages and investment in know-how for the offshore wind generation sector. “As a first step, the work is very important, and from that, as a united company, to train employees and expand our service capacity overseas. We know some engineering solutions that can be applied here. The work, in fact, now, begins with anticipation and the search for knowledge,” he said. says
Jega Melo: ‘Everything has synergy with the academy’
The supervising director of Sebrae-RN, Jose Ferreira de Melo Neto (Zeca Melo), characterized the preparation process as ‘goal’ until the operation of offshore wind farms in the state. “I am impressed by the priority with which small companies are held in the United Kingdom, always betting on local development. Everything is based on integration with universities and technology centers.
Melo explained that a number of contacts had been made on British soil and the aim was to develop future partnerships. “We love these partnerships, especially in technology, chain development and business opportunities. It’s something that’s within our expectations, but it’s something that they do.” [os britânicos] are very interested”, highlighted Zeca Melo. Leon Aguiar, Director General of the RN Institute for Sustainable Development and Environment (IDEMA), represented the state government in the delegation.
Rodrigo Mello, director of Senai-RN and Senai Institute of Innovation in Renewable Energies, assessed the work positively. “We wanted to see what the opportunities are so that we will be ready when the division starts. We want to formalize contacts, bring technology, business perspectives and prepare to start operations, which will start in three to four years on our shores”, he says.
