Polio, also known as poliomyelitis, is an acute infectious disease caused by a virus that lives in the intestines, the poliovirus, and can infect children and adults through direct contact with faeces and secretions excreted through the mouths of patients. In severe cases where paralysis occurs, the lower extremities are most affected.
“For 32 years, the Americas region has been considered polio-free, but unfortunately, vaccine coverage is declining in the world, as well as in our Brazil,” the director added. According to him, the low rate of vaccination against the disease has been exacerbated by the pandemic COVID-19.
Quiroga also noted that last week the government launched a plan to combat polio with the aim of organizing the work of the union, states and municipalities. Among the priority actions is the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance and vaccination.
“Vaccines are still available in vaccination centers. It is possible, yes, to reach the goal. Therefore, it is essential to involve health managers and civil society. Countries like Paraíba and Amaba, for example, have already vaccinated more than 90% of the target audience.”
It was a polio vaccination campaign Extend at least twice due to low commitment. Achieving the goal is important to prevent Brazil from facing the disease again, which was eradicated in the country in the 1990s, and it should be noted that vaccination is the only form of prevention.
