Second case of monkeypox confirmed in Petropolis

Another case of monkeypox (Monkeypox) was confirmed in Petropolis: a 32-year-old man, who is stable and isolated in his home. In a note, the Municipal Health Service (SMS) said that it received the positive diagnosis last Friday, September 22, and that the epidemiological surveillance coordination is not authorized to reveal more details about the patient, such as his neighborhood, for example. . This is the second positive test in the municipality – the first case of the disease was confirmed in the city on August 19.
Worldwide, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that from January to August, 41,600 cases of monkeypox and 12 deaths were reported – in Brazil, during this period, there were 4,144 cases. The disease caused by the disease affects at least 96 countries.
In Petropolis, data from the Epidemiological Commission of the disease, updated by the SMS Epidemiological Surveillance Department, show that so far, 23 cases have been reported in the city. Of those, 15 have been eliminated and six are still being analyzed pending test results.
Most of the reported cases, 14 in total, are residents of District One. The others refer to residents of the second district, with four cases, the third and fourth districts, with two cases each, and the fifth district with one case. Of this total, 15 patients are men and eight are women – most of these people are between the ages of 21 and 40, with 13 cases reported.
The municipality’s first case of the disease was confirmed in August. A 45-year-old man, who probably contracted the disease in another city, because, according to the Ministry of Health, was visiting a municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro that, at the time, had a higher number of infections. Currently, the patient is in good condition and has been discharged from the hospital.
In a conversation with the Diário de Petrópolis team in August, the municipal health minister, Marcus Curvelo, highlighted the city’s low case rates and directed residents to continue to maintain health and safety measures. “We still recommend people to constantly clean their hands with soap and water and to use alcohol gel,” he said.

If signs and symptoms appear, which include fever, headache, back and muscle pain, rash, chills and fatigue, the patient should seek any of the municipality’s emergency units, such as the Emergency Care Units (UPAs) Cascatinha, Center and Itaipava or the emergency room in Leônidas Sampaio. Pregnant and postpartum women should already seek care at Alcides Carneiro (HAC). The incubation period usually ranges from 6 to 16 days, but can last up to 21 days.

To prevent the disease, it is necessary to avoid contact with people with a confirmed diagnosis until the wounds have healed. It is also necessary to maintain hygienic measures such as using alcohol gel and washing your hands with soap and water.
