Mohe, in Heilongjiang Province, broke the negative temperature record. A TV station revealed the severity of the cold by showing how quickly a broken egg freezes.
Mohe City was already known as the Chinese Arctic, but the cold last Sunday broke records, taking thermometers below 53 degrees. According to Sky News, the previous minimum of -52°C, which was recorded in 1969, has been overcome.
In a report by the Chinese television station CCTV, in which it is possible to see pictures of the city painted entirely in white, it can be seen how cold it was during the moment when I opened an egg in a shovel that froze in a few seconds. Already before the weekend, temperatures were at -50°C, with no high expected in the coming days.
Therefore, the China Meteorological Agency decided to renew the alert, due to the cold, on Tuesday. As Sky News meteorologist Joanna Robinson explained, “a severe cold snap has affected much of East Asia”, a situation that is “not unusual at this time of year, when winds can bring in air from Siberia”.
We must remember that these temperatures come after China, in 2022, overcame the most intense heat wave on record, damaging crops, causing fires and hitting energy sources.
