The North’s Korean Central News Agency revealed Sunday that the missile launches carried out by North Korea in recent weeks were “tactical nuclear exercises” supervised by North Korean President Kim Jong Un.
According to the same news agency, “the units of the Korean People’s Army, which are responsible for the use of strategic nuclear weapons, organized military exercises between September 25 and October 9, to check and evaluate the deterrence and nuclear counterattack capability of the country.”
The North’s official agency wrote that the military capability was a “stern warning to the enemies.”
In the past two weeks, North Korea has launched at least seven ballistic missile launches in a series of weapons tests.
The seventh launch took place on Saturday, hours after the United States and South Korea ended other naval exercises off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula.
On Thursday, South Korea said 12 North Korean planes flew over the joint border area, prompting Seoul to deploy 30 military hardware in the same area in response to Pyongyang’s maneuver.
