“Venezuelans have expressed their absolute will by electing Nicolás Maduro (…) for the 2025-2031 term. We proclaim Nicolás Maduro as president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela,” said Elvis Amoroso, head of the electoral commission, at a ceremony held at the National Electoral Congress in the presence of Maduro.
Also on Monday, Venezuela’s attorney general, Tarek William Saab, accused a key opposition figure, Maria Corina Machado, of involvement in an alleged hacking scheme to “rig” the election results.
The official also accused other opposition figures in exile, including Leopoldo Lopez.
The head of the National Electoral Council on Sunday denounced “the attack on the data transmission system that led to a delay” in the vote count.
According to the results of the National Electoral Council, Nicolás Maduro was re-elected for a third term with 51.2 percent of the vote. Opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, who replaced opposition leader María Corina Machado at the last minute, received 44.3 percent of the vote.
