Are there equal professional opportunities for men and women in the health sector? The answer varies depending on the gender of the respondent. At least that’s the conclusion of the opinion study “Gender Equality and Leadership: What the Younger Generation Thinks About Healthcare,” which will be presented Thursday at the LIFE Movement’s “Women’s Leadership in Healthcare” conference.
According to the results seen by JN, which were based on a sample of 500 health sector workers, one-fifth of men in this field believe that there are equal opportunities between the sexes. In contrast, only 14% of women give the same answer.
As for whether there is (or not) gender equality in leadership positions in the health sector, the picture is similar: 35% of men say that leadership positions are equal between the genders, but only 11% of women share this opinion.
However, the importance of gender equality seems to be receiving greater agreement. To the question “Do you consider it important to achieve gender equality in leadership?”, 80% of men answered in the affirmative. In the case of women, the positive response occurred in 95% of cases.
As for personal experiences, 35% of the professionals surveyed said they had actually experienced gender discrimination in the workplace – on the other hand, 15% said they had experienced this type of aggression.
The opinion study was developed by GFK at the request of the LIFE movement – Women’s Leadership in Health, an initiative that wants to promote equality in leadership in the health sector. This is a joint initiative between Faces de Eva – Estudos sobre a Mulher/CICS.NOVA, NOVA FCSH and the research and pharmaceutical company Roche. Conference “Women Leadership in Healthcare: 50 Years of Achievements?” It takes place at the Lisbon Convention Center on Thursday.
