According to the poll published by the Italian state television station RAI once the polls closed in the country (and in the European Union, where Italy was the member state in which voting continued until later, at 11 p.m. local time), the Italian Brotherhood received between 26 30% and 30% of the votes, ahead of the Center-Left Democratic Party, which received between 21% and 25%.
The third most voted political force was the 5-Star Movement (left-wing populism), with 10% to 14% of the vote, followed by Forsa Italia (centre-right), with 8.5% to 10.5%, and the Hardline Party. The right of the league, by Eurosceptic Matteo Salvini, is between 8% and 10%, according to the survey conducted by the Opinio Italia consortium for the RAI.
Another voter opinion poll, published by Sky TV, showed the Brotherhood of Italy winning with approximately 26.5%, followed by the Democratic Party with 23%, while the 5-Star Movement came in third place with 12.5% and Forsa Italia. It leads the league (9.5% vs. 9%), and the results are in line with the RAI poll.
Looking at the previous European elections, in 2019, and as predicted by opinion polls over the past few months, there is an exchange of roles between far-right parties in Italy, as happened five years ago, where Salvini’s League achieved an undoubted victory, obtaining 34.3 votes. % of the vote, giving it 29 of the 76 seats Italy is entitled to in the European Parliament, while Italy’s brothers received 6.4%, giving it five seats in the European session.
Indeed, Meloni, who heads the European Conservatives and Reformists (far-right) group in the European Parliament, obtains, according to these opinion polls, a better result than in the 2022 legislative elections (24.6%), which allowed her to win. She became the first woman to govern Italy, heading a coalition government that also included the League and Forza Italia.
The Democratic Party, led by Eli Schlein, asserts itself as the main opposition force, but is not expected to grow much compared to the result obtained five years ago (22.7%).
Some 361 million voters from the 27 EU countries were called to choose the composition of the next European Parliament, with 720 MEPs elected, 15 more than the previous legislature.
Italy is the third member state with the largest number of seats in the European Parliament, 76, behind Germany (96) and France (81).
