In just five months, Marilia has recorded more dengue cases than it did in all of 2023 and 2022. According to the epidemiological bulletin issued weekly by the Municipal Health Department, between January and May 2024, 8,537 positive cases of dengue fever were recorded.
For comparison purposes, during the twelve months of 2023, Marilia recorded 3,122 cases and five deaths. In 2022, 1,041 cases were recorded, without any deaths. This represents approximately 4,374 more cases than the previous two years combined.
So far, the virus transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito has caused 12 deaths in the city in 2024. However, the scenario may worsen, as there are nine deaths under investigation suspected to be caused by dengue fever, according to the US State Department. health.
In the face of this alarming increase, it is necessary for residents to intensify their care to prevent the spread of vector mosquitoes. Simple measures, such as eliminating containers in which standing water can accumulate, always keeping water tanks and swimming pools closed, and using repellents and protective barriers on windows, can make a difference in preventing dengue.
