Londonerina received a visit on Friday (1st) from Consul General of the United Kingdom Lisa Weeden and Honorary Consul of the United Kingdom in Parana, Adam Patterson. In the morning, they were welcomed by Mayor Marcelo Pelinati and signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Municipality of Llandarina and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, with the aim of establishing cooperation between strategic areas of common interest. The meeting was attended by Municipal Secretary of Government Joao Luis Esteves and Director of Governance and International Relations of the municipality, Liz Rodriguez, in unveiling the initiative.
The partnership aims to create conceptual, technical and operational measures to promote and strengthen access to culture and education, within the scope of public policies, and to create institutional conditions with the aim of establishing connections and communication between culture, education and economic development. Diplomatic and sub-diplomatic relations between London and the United Kingdom.
It also aims to partner with governmental and non-governmental organizations with a view to strengthening and supporting actions derived from the MoU.
Mayor Marcelo Belinati said the signing of the agreement brings Londona closer to the British government, enabling the exchange of knowledge and information in fields such as culture and education. “We have an excellent agreement with the British government to provide free English curriculum to all teachers in the municipal public education network and the idea is to extend this to other areas. We want to attract new industries and companies,” he highlighted.
UK Consul General Lisa Weeden said it was her first time in London and her aim was to explore more opportunities with the city, which has historical links. “This memorial is a step on that path, to strengthen relationships and create more opportunities to work together. There are opportunities in business sectors, there are already established British companies in Londrina, there are some investors from Parana and Londrina in the UK. “London has huge ambitions in the education sector and the UK can support that,” he said.
Honorary Ambassador of the United Kingdom in Parana, Adam Patterson, said he was in Londona for the third time in the past 12 months and the intention was to continue to strengthen ties with the municipality. “We want to find new areas to work together in the fields of culture and education, and this monument comes to contribute to this. We have a strong relationship with Londona and the idea is to continue to create new ways of working together,” he highlighted.
A mural celebrating English literature
In the afternoon, Prof. Pedro Viriato Baricot de Sousa unveiled a mural celebrating English literature at the Municipal Public Library. The initiative was made possible through the joint efforts of the Municipal Departments and Government and Departments of Culture and the Consulate General of the United Kingdom in Parana. The purpose of the mural is to promote and encourage the reading of British works and writers.
For the Municipal Secretary of Government, João Luis Esteves, this is another important partnership for the municipality, given the historical ties between Londonerna and the UK and the progress of international relations integrated in the Government Secretariat. “Cultural, educational and economic development benefits,” he said.
Half of the panel features the image of Shakespeare, one of the main representatives of English literature, and the other half features the image of Harry Potter – British author J.K.
