Keir Starmer, the leader of the British Labor Party, admitted today that he slept with King Charles III “a bit” after he was ‘approved’ to form a government after his landslide victory in Thursday’s general election.
“You must be exhausted,” the 75-year-old monarch told Starmer, who welcomed him to the Buckingham Palace audience room, in a formal act to invest him in the role of prime minister.
“I slept a little bit,” he said after the meeting, officially becoming Prime Minister with his official residence and office at 10 Downing Street in London.
The palace released a short video showing the greetings between the two as they sat down to continue their conversation.
Starmer highlighted the government’s “rapid change” after the election results were announced, to which the head of state replied that “it must be tiring to have to deal with everything at once”.
As tradition dictates, Starmer arrived at the palace with his wife Victoria after previous Prime Minister Rishi Sunak left office.
The Conservatives lost the election after winning 121 seats in the House of Commons (fewer), compared to 412 for Labour, which returned to power after 14 years of centre-right rule.
