A general observation of Saturn will take place this Saturday (26th), starting at 6 pm, at the Tamandaré Statue, in Joao Pessoa. This action is being promoted by the Associação Paraibana de Astronomia and aims to announce the annular eclipse of the sun that will occur on October 14, taking advantage of the opposition of Saturn, which is the best time to observe the star. The event is free and open to the public of all ages who will be able to observe the planet through telescopes.
According to amateur astronomer and member of the Parabana Astronomical Society, Marcelo Zurita, this approximation occurs because both the Earth and Saturn revolve around the Sun, while the Earth takes only one year to complete one revolution around the Sun, and Saturn takes 29 years to accomplish this. a job.
And the convergence between the two planets occurs every 378 days when the Earth passes the orbit of Saturn, leaving the planet against the sun, that is, leaving Saturn in the opposite direction of the sun, which is the best time to observe the planet. rings.
Can Saturn be seen with the naked eye?
According to Marcelo, yes. Like Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter, Saturn – the farthest of all – can also be seen with the naked eye, but only as a yellow dot in the sky.
During this opposition, Saturn will rise eastward in the early evening, rising in the sky every hour throughout the night.
Observation through telescopes
Zurita explains that observing the planet through a telescope is the best option, as it is possible to see the rings and moons of Saturn in more detail. Marcelo adds that this observation can also be made with binoculars with good magnification.
The approach of Saturn and the annular eclipse
Marcelo explains that there is no relationship between the two phenomena. However, there is a connection between the upcoming super blue moon and the annular eclipse.
A solar eclipse occurs during the new moon, about 14 days after the full moon. Zurita explains that a supermoon occurs when the moon is closest to Earth and after 14 days the moon will be farthest from Earth.
The eclipse will occur during the period when the moon is farthest from the earth, and therefore it will not be able to completely cover the sun, so it will turn into an annular eclipse.
So when the eclipse occurs, a ring of fire will form around the moon.
upcoming astronomical events
And Marcelo says that in addition to this observation that will happen this Saturday (25), it will also happen in 2023:
- On August 31, a super blue moon was observed.
- September 29, full moon observed;
- October 14, annular solar eclipse;
- October 28, Hunter’s Moon;
- November 27, Beaver Moon;
- December 26, cold moon.
