Health Minister Nicia Trindade believes that the health situation in Rio Grande do Sul due to the floods that struck the state will require attention even after the waters recede due to diseases such as leptospirosis and the need for urgent medical care, and many hospitals have stopped working due to the floods.
“We could have a lot of public health problems after that, when the water starts to go down because of this complete collapse in the city. So, it’s very difficult to predict, but, certainly, this is not the scenario in which we should have an improvement in health conditions, and certainly not It can be said that in the next two months, what will happen is that there will be improvement in some places but not in others and we have to be attentive to all the realities of the state,” he said in an interview with The State. Nesia said there is concern that the shortage of flood-affected hospitals will harm people needing care, hospitalization, emergency surgery, dialysis and oncology treatment. “We are working on a plan with the Republika Srpska Health Department and the municipalities for each location, because the realities will be different in the state. It’s a big task in a disaster. It’s a set of procedures in this not-so-exact scenario.”
The Minister stressed the importance of taking care of people working in rescue efforts who are exposed to flood waters that may be contaminated. “They have to wear shoes and protection, which is very important for rescue teams. We will have to, over the course of 30 days, monitor people’s symptoms. Universal use of antibiotics is not recommended. But when a person has a fever, the pain is low.” Back pain and leg pain are some of the symptoms of leptospirosis, and it can take up to 30 days, so watch for these signs.
There are 207.8 thousand people away from home. Of this total, 48.8 thousand are in shelters and 159 thousand are homeless (people staying with family or friends).
Republika Srpska has 401 out of 497 municipalities where some storm-related problems were reported, with 1.4 million people affected.
State highways are recording total and partial closure of 95 sections of 41 roads.
According to the new update, there are 451,000 points without electricity in the state. In the Central and Eastern Tropical Europe region, there are 206,000 properties without energy. RGE Sul has 245,000 affected properties.
Korsan has a total of 649,000 customers without water supply in the state.
