Apple is said to be stepping up its efforts to bring more production parts to the iPhone internally. According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is creating a new office focused on developing in-house chips, to replace those currently provided by Broadcom and Skyworks.
The report states that Apple is hiring “a few dozen people” to develop the chips in Irvine, California. Coincidentally, it’s close to where the Skyworks and Broadcom offices are, too. Apple is looking for employees with “experience in modem chips and wireless semiconductors.”
moreover Bloomberg It indicates that the designation of the new Irvine offices will work with radio equipment, radio frequency integrated circuits, and the wireless system. The team will also focus on semiconductors for Bluetooth and wi-fi connectivity.
The report notes that it is part of a broader strategy to expand satellite offices, allowing the tech giant to target engineering centers and attract employees who may not want to work from the Silicon Valley base. This approach is intended to help Apple achieve its goal of making more of its components.
This effort builds on Apple’s previous work on wireless chips. AirPods and Apple Watch already have dedicated parts that allow them to pair with devices, and Apple’s latest iPhones include U1 ultra-wideband chips to more accurately determine your location and connect to the AirTag accessory and other products.
Apple and Broadcom reached a two-year agreement in January 2020. Under this agreement, Broadcom agreed to provide Apple with additional wireless components. Broadcom supplied Apple with radio frequency components and modules for iPhones prior to this agreement, so the 2020 agreement represents an expansion of the relationship between Broadcom and Skyworks.
Skyworks has trusted Apple for more than half of its revenue in recent years. However, earlier this year, the company reduced its reliance on Apple with a separate $2.75 billion acquisition deal, a key move because reliance on one company can cause problems, especially now that it has come. Start creating their own designs for the other components.
In recent years, Apple has been betting on creating its own components, iPhones and, most recently, Mac CPUs have already been built. In 2019, the company acquired the smartphone modem business from Intel, despite the fact that it still buys modems for iPhones from Qualcomm, changing only its modems It should happen in 2023.
